Greenheart Shop, Chicago’s only downtown nonprofit fair trade shop, is asking for the community’s help to keep its doors open.
As with many small businesses, the era of large online retailers has affected Greenheart Shop’s ability to reach local customers. After calling Chicago home for 10 years, the Old Town-based store is now at risk of closure.
“Greenheart Shop has been at the heart of fair trade in Chicago. For 10 years, it has served as a gathering place and showcase for the vibrant fair trade community in Chicago. I've been to many fair trade stores throughout the US and the world, and Greenheart is without a doubt the most beautiful fair trade store I have ever seen. When people enter the Shop, most everyone comments on how special and beautiful it is. If you have never been, go NOW!” said Katherine Bissell Cordova, Executive Director of Chicago Fair Trade.
After calling Chicago home for 10 years, the Old Town-based store is now at risk of closure.
Greenheart Shop offers everything from organic clothing and handmade jewelry to fair trade chocolate, hand painted ceramics and sophisticated home goods. Everything is either eco-friendly, supports a local social enterprise or is sourced from artisans in over 55 countries worldwide who are paid a fair living wage for their craft. Keeping a physical store open in Chicago is essential to increasing awareness of fair trade and helping hundreds of artisans globally.
